My 5 Turtle Siblings

(L to R) Tank, Baby, Lady, George and Scamp! They are called Red Eared Sliders. They are two and a half and three years old. They love to bask underneath their heat lamp (simulated sun). They like to chase fish, which they often catch and eat. Lately, they've gotten lazy at chasing fish because we spoil them by feeding them turtle food all the time. They're fast in the water and their mission is life is scrounching for MORE FOOD! They are great actors and can fool anyone into believing they're hungry. When they bask, they like to get completely dry and sometimes fall asleep. Eventually they'll wake up and slide back into the water and dive bomb to the bottom in search of food! When basking, they will always climb on top of each other to be the highest and closest to the sun. Here is what I call a turtle tower of two. At times, we've seen them pile up 3 high. As they have grown so much, it's harder and harder to get to the top!

Hey! Those guys look just like Fred and George - our swimmy friends. Well, actually Fred and George are a little fatter. By "fatter" we mean if you were holding them like you would hold a sandwich, there would be more turtle between the top shell and the bottom shell. They are very picky eaters and prefer to have sun-dried baby shrimp over anything else. We kinda feel sorry for them cause even though they have the sunlamp and the waterfall and the bubbles, we think they'd prefer to be in a big pond somewhere. The Lady has been thinking of trying to find them a better place, but we don't know what to do. Do you have any ideas?

grr, midnight & cocoa, as for ideas in giving them away, that's a tough one. Maybe zoos, parks and pond facilities or maybe even a turtle rescue. Good luck! Monkey

our momma loves her swimmy friends, but they try ta bite anybuddy but her. maybe she should just get a HUGE tank that's even more huge than the huge one we has now so she won't feel so sorry for them. after all, if the was out in the wild, who would feed them sun dried baby shrimp every day?

gm&c and Lady, our tank is huge. Daddy says, "it's 200 gallons. lots of work." BUT, I know they love it. Mommy spends hours in front of it, so does Cooper. Mommy has lots of fish that keep having babies. She raises the babies then the babies get big and make more babies!!! Now the babies I love to watch. Monkey

hmmm...we got a calkilater out...let's see...2 hunnerd gallons ta make 5 turtles happy is 40 gallons per turtle. so, if we had 80 gallons in the tank they'd be happy. we haf only 60 an they looks cramped. we gotta upgrade.

well i'm sure any turtle would be happier with more room, just so they can swim around and chase fish! Nice tip on the shrimp. Sometimes we give them earthworms. Also, bloodworms, pellets and frozen smashed up veggies. Monkey

Look - it's Turtle Talk with Monkey! LOL - frozen smashed up veggies? That sounds like a great idea. Do they float? Fred and George only like floating food. I'll give that a try - thanks!

Hi Ms. Karen, they have frozen brine shrimp, blood worms and veggies. they're called gum drops or something like that. in the fish dept. they have a little freezer. we've heard they like frozen peas, etc. but Mommy and Daddy haven't tried those.

Good luck! MB
